Lewis sets out ambition for a million new homes by 2020

Housing and planning minister Brandon Lewis has said, during a TV interview with the BBC’s Inside Out programme to be aired tonight, that he would like to see one million new homes built before the end of this parliament.

During the interview the minister said:

  • By the end of this parliament, success I think would mean that we have seen a build in total of something like a million homes.

The understanding is that the minister’s comments represent an aspiration, rather than an official target. The Department for Communities and Local Government’s position remains not to set official targets for housebuilding.

The most recent official housebuilding statistics show that construction started on a total of 136,320 homes in the year to June 2015, down one per cent year on year, although completions in the same time frame were up 15 per cent, at 131,060 to the end of the second quarter of 2015.
